Type: Backcountry or Sidecountry
Description
This is a fairly typical climb to access one of the 10th Mountain huts: about 5 miles and 2,500 vertical. After a flat and easy traverse of the historic 10th Mountain training grounds (used in WW II to train troops for fighting in the Alps), you slow ascend road 708 up McAllister Gulch.
There's nothing remarkable as you easily climb through trees until about 10,400'. Here you make a right hand bend the the grade increases substantially. Climb switchbacks for over 1,000' (the crux!) until you get a ridge and saddle at 11,700'. Do not climb up Resolution Mountain or continue on the road. Look for signs and head east (a right turn off the road). You'll go slightly downhill and the hut will be visible in the distance on top of the ridge.
