Need to Know

Be prepared to rappel, unless you are certain there is enough snow to ski and/or air over the two cliff bands.

Description

From the bottom of Chute The Moon, there is an obvious cleft on the skier's left. Steep skiing through a moderate choke brings one down to the first of two cliff bands. There is just a short snowfield between the two drops; it isn't really worth transitioning to skis if you are rappelling. Anchors for each cliff (both on skier's left) were in good shape as of February 2015.

In a big snow year, both drops may be skied over and/or aired. With a thinner snowpack, it may be more prudent to rappel both. A 30m rope is plenty for each rap.

Note: Powder Project's "maximum angle" projections are inaccurate; portions of this line approach the mid 40 degree range.

Chuter Buck / Buck Crack in a big snow year (2010/2011). Upper choke (rocks in middle) is buried in this picture, and lower drops aren't always as small as they appear.

This line is filling in nicely! Top rappel is about 10m and the second rap is about 7m with a little cave (hole) to work around. We were the first ...
