Ascent #1. You should consider hiking from base to summit and not be a Joey. Hell Brook Trail can easily take lives. The Alpine zone is fragile and should be respected and taken care of; watch out for boot-pack on vegetation, do not attempt in foul weather, do not attempt in thin cover. It will be very icy and conditions on the Chin of Mt. Mansfield will remind you of an iceberg stuck in the arctic. Getting lost in bad weather is easily accomplished and dropping in on the wrong side will leave you stranded in the wilderness over an hour away from the base of Stowe. If you are riding Stowe for the day, you are better off sticking to the slopes and leaving this backcountry run for an adventure day.
