Overview

Park at Bear Trap and break off left towards the Cone (aka Powder Park III). Transition at the Cone, the Saddle or Short Swing summit, and descend to the east toward Brighton. Stay in the gully in the sparse tree, for 1000+ ft of 20-30 degree slope. So good.

Description

At the beginning of the season this line gets sun in the morning and can be "scwacky"/"scrubby." But when the big snow hits in February and March, you can't beat this line. It is longer, more consistent than PPIII and has a better exit than PPIII or Short Swing which has the dense "survival" trees at the bottom.

Downside, parking at Bear Trap can be difficult.

History & Background

This line has been done a ton. I couldn't find a name on the UAC desktop Place Names. We always called it Japanese Trees.

This was taken from the top of the cone looking north. Runs drop from the peak seen on the ski-line into the Lake Desolation drainage, but they are steep and much more avalanche-prone than PP3.

On wet snow days, getting to the top of the cone may be a bit of a challenge.
