The Sonora Pass typically opens early summer. Prior to the road opening, snowmobiles are required to access this area. Wilderness permits are required if staying overnight.

Need to Know

Many choose to descend the longer trail to Deadman Creek. If you choose to do this, park a second car at the switchback turnout west of the trailhead or plan on hitchhiking. This is about a 10-15 drive and is longer than it looks. Don't plan on walking it.

Description

This route ascends Leavitt Peak via the Sonora Pass Trailhead, which is the highest point on on the Sonora Pass and a popular stop for PCTers. Park at a pullout near the trailhead and head straight south up the first obvious ridgeline. Many skiers will choose to lap this first short climb. Enjoy the view and continue on to Leavitt Peak on flat terrain before a short downhill section to the bowl and start the last grueling 1000 foot climb to Leavitt Peak.
