Type: Backcountry or Sidecountry
Utilizes a telecommunications access road that has occasional snow cat operations to maintain the transmission facility and fire tower.
Need to Know
Do not attempt to drive the road—it ruins the skiing and costs a lot for recovery! A snow cat frequently travels this road to get workers to the telecommunications transmission facility that sits in the saddle near the summit.
Description
An easy ascent of the Mestaa'ėhehe Mountain Fire Lookout Road. The ascent is suitable for cross country equipment or light touring gear. Park just off the road at the entrance to Forest Service Road #192.1 which is a quarter mile from the Echo Mountain ski area entrance.
The tour climbs the road directly to the fire tower where you can spend the night if you made reservations. Simply reverse the approach for the descent watching out for a few barren patches near the top!
