Type: Backcountry or Sidecountry
Overview
This is similar to all "6 point" ski runs: expect good powder, remote skiing, no people, easy to get lost, and lots of downed trees. But on the right day, all of these lines ski awesome.
Need to Know
If you are not a good route finder, this route could be a real issue. You need to have a GPS and be well versed in route finding to attempt this type of a ski run. It is long and unforgiving, so don't head out there unless you are very self sufficient.
Description
The best way to access the 6.1 Ski Run is to skin up Mines leaving the parking lot from the top of Berthoud and ski the NW Shoulder into the Vortex. After skiing the NW Shoulder, skin part way up the Vortex and follow the 6.3 access. After topping out on the 6.3 access trail, follow the Roberts Creek approach.
Drop In Point:
When dropping Roberts Headwall you are heading north, but when dropping 6.1 you are heading west, down and slightly right toward 7 Mile Trail and Second Creek trailhead in the distance. There are lots of downed trees and obstacles, but a good fall line. We actually found a fairly large opening that can be seen from 40 between Second Creek and First Creek. The first half of the line trees are spaced well with a moderate fall line. The second half is steeper than anticipated with tighter trees.
We ended up in a creek bed, heading right, that eventually connected to the Roberts Creek, and eventually 7 Mile Trail and the Fraser River. After a mile on the 7 Mile Trail following the Fraser River, you end up at Highway 40. This is the last switchback heading to Winter Park.
