Overview

Ski Y Mountain's 0.75-mile-long meadow from the peak saddle to Bear Flat in Slide Canyon.

Description

This run begins at the Y Mountain saddle between the East and West Y Mountain peaks. This saddle is reachable through a well-known and well-traveled trail that begins at the "Hike the Y" trailhead above Provo, Utah, passes by the top of the BYU Y, cuts across Y mountain to travel up Slide Canyon, then turns off towards the peaks some 200 yards after Bear Flat. This run follows or parallels the trail back from the saddle to Bear Flats.

The top two-thirds of this trail is a long, wide meadow that forms a draw down the south face of Y Mountain. The top portion isn't very steep, so it's an exercise in gliding through (hopefully) powder as you enjoy the scenery.

Soon, the canyon gains more slope and you can carve your way through aspen groves and in and out of meadows. Lower still, the canyon narrows and becomes steep and thick with trees. Deep snow is still fun through this section, but you'll find yourself stopping and starting more often.

Suddenly, you'll pop out into Slide Canyon. This section is open and enjoyable as you glide into Bear Flats. Your run ends here, because skiing past Bear Flats is a sure way to hit a rock.

The upper meadow has enough snow for skiing. Below about 8930 the run has too much debris to ski without much more snow. — 10h 00m
