The road only opens up to cars during the summer months, dependent on snowpack. Usually completely dug out just in time for the Peak 10 Classic on July 4th.

Description

Starting at the parking lot at the base of Peak 9, take the dirt road up the mountain. Follow the (easy) road all the way up to the top of the Mercury SuperChair. This is where the road changes from dirt 2wd to definite high-clearance 4wd. There are plenty of spaces for less-capable vehicles to park, to hike / hitch-hike from this point. 1.7 miles remain of techy and tight driving.

The first crux comes immediately after passing the top of the chairlift. Having attempted the road in a 4runner and failing, I would recommend only pickups or 4x4-designed vehicles beyond this point. There may be a secondary crux just a few switchbacks away, depending on the year.

Or just hike and not worry about any of that! On days other than July 4th, I'm sure this makes for a very enjoyable (though lengthy) outing.
