Type: Backcountry or Sidecountry
Overview
The trees connecting the shoulder of St. Vrain Mountain to Ski Road are a great way to avoid the winds that whip above treeline in this area. An accessible after-work lap in Boulder County, this is a great and fast skin+ski with great powder all the time.
Description
Use the St. Vrain Mountain: Rock Creek Ascent Route (Ski Road) from Allenspark. At the end of the road, instead of pointing towards the summit of St. Vrain, take the easier and more mellow south angle to the shoulder of the mountain. There's a very obvious bench around 11,300' that provides wind shelter as well as a great flat area to transition.
Almost any line back down drops you back to the forest road, but take care not to drop too far south (which can be tempting) as it may/would drop you into Coney Flats rather then Allenspark.
