Type: Backcountry or Sidecountry
Red Mountain pass closes if there is too much snow and ice on the road forcing a hike or trapping you inside the gates.
Description
This ascent was my first peak bagged on skis, it was perfect.
Start at the BC ski parking lot and skin SW on the road. Follow the road, but be careful because it traverses under some avalanche terrain. Continue on the road, you'll pass St. Paul Lodge and Hut on the right. Keep going up the road until you get to the base of the mountain.
The route leaves the road one gully from St. Paul which equates to roughly a 10th of a mile. As you ascend the gully, we kept the steepest part of the gully (terrain trap) to the right. There were some cool cornices and stuff in this area. This route keeps you out of avalanche terrain once you are above tree line.
Be aware that this route steepens as you hit the north side of the false summit near the top, it was very icy and had mixed conditions with rocks when I was there. Once you get to the top of this false summit, go on to the true summit, it has a big antenna on it. It is almost a 13er but not quite.
Enjoy the ride down.
