Type: Backcountry or Sidecountry
Need an annual climbing pass and permit to ascend above 10,000 feet; National Park entrance fee also required.
Description
Park at the obvious parking lot just near a bridge over the creek and big curve in the road. Start by hiking (skis on pack) up the Frying Pan creek trail to Summerland. At snowline, begin the long ski up towards Summerland. Much of the terrain here is glacier, so take the necessary precautions such as wearing a harness and roping up to avoid a crevasse fall on the Frying Pan and Whitman Glacier.
Ascend the steep headwall to gain the Frying Pan Glacier and then begin a long traverse towards Little Tahoma. Aim for the obvious notch to cut over onto the Whitman Glacier. Continue traversing till you can cut up toward the summit of Little Tahoma. The summit climb is loose rock and climbing skills, a rope, and confidence with exposure is recommended.
