Type: Backcountry or Sidecountry
This is on the edge of Winter Park ski area. It would be a bad idea to try and enter the ski area on the west side of Zero Creek Drainage.
Overview
Super moderate ski line in the Zero Creek Drainage below the Zero Creek Bowl.
Need to Know
There is some avalanche danger on the drop-in point into Zero Creek and also some from the Zero Creek Bowl once you have entered the drainage.
Be sure to do the following:
- Carry a beacon, shovel and probe
- Consult with the CAIC website
Description
Parking Area:
- Please use the same parking area as lower Zero Creek approach, and also "
Morning Glory"
Approach Trail:
- For the most part, follow the upper east side of the Zero Creek drainage to the drop-in point for "
Morning Glory"
- After passing "
Morning Glory," continue up still following the upper east side of the Zero Creek drainage
- There are numerous drop-in points facing north before getting to the Zero Creek Bowl
- Just as the Zero Creek Bowl comes into sight, you have to climb a slightly steep section if your plans are to ski the harder lines in the Bowl
- Just before the steep section to access the bowl skiing, there is an easy drop-in point for the Zero Creek drainage
Skiing:
- The initial drop-in point depicted on the GPS track has a moderately steep drop-in point, which could be dangerous on the wrong day
- Once in the drainage, only a few worries, unexpected rocks, and Zero Creek Bowl avalanche
- Skiing and navigating is fairly easy
- While skiing down you can see lots of potential for harder drop-in points
- Once in the trees, we followed the creek, trees were not too tight. Now they could be too tight if your skiing is not better than average
- Within 10 - 15 minutes of dropping in, I was back to the switchback on Highway 40
