History & Background
This is just one of 5 main trails of the defunct Snow Bowl Ski Area that closed during the Big Warm that closed a number of small ski areas in the northeast. These trails maintained by local users run from narrow and steep to meandering tree glades. The land is now preserved within the Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, part of the Morris County Park System. It sits right behind the Jefferson Township High and Middle School.
Parking is limited at the old entrance and additional parking is available at the Middle School after hours and on weekends. Mahlon Dickerson is only 60 minutes from NYC in New Jersey. Please be advised that the park restricts access to only Touring/Xcountry/backcountry skiing equipment only. Splitboards may be pushing it but by definition that is a form of touring cross-country activity.
No hiking or use of snowshoes to access the backcountry. Rangers will check people at the parking lots for compliance. Tickets have not been issues, only warnings.
