Type: Backcountry or Sidecountry
Overview
The Cosmic Couloir is a quick and steep drop from the NW ridge of Mountain Boy Peak. This line is highly visible from the summit of Independence Pass.
Description
After Independence Pass opens in the spring, park at the summit lot and start skinning up the (likely) heavily used skintrack leading up
Snowfence Ridge. Climb over the obvious rock spire at the high point of the ridge and down the south side (there's a roughly 10-15' 3rd class downclimb chimney on the south side of this rock spire).
As soon as you get below the chimney, you're on top of the Cosmic Couloir. This line can be seen from the summit parking lot and the entire skin to reach it, so you should be able to monitor snow conditions upon approach. This couloir is deeply set, so expect it to take longer on a spring morning to warm up and soften then the rest of the lines on
Snowfence Ridge.
Ski the line and either go south, towards the Mountain Boy saddle (for more laps elsewhere), or ski directly to the bottom of the basin for car shuttle/hitchhiking up the pass/skinning back to the summit of the pass.
