Type: Backcountry or Sidecountry
Overview
Monroe is a great option if you want to head to the west side and find the COG way too boring, but Ammo/Burt aren't in. On a good day, it can easily be done after having some fun on Oakes.
Need to Know
While the descent is not very complicated, conditions can make it quite challenging.
It is an active avalanche zone.
Description
Approach: You can either ascend via the COG and traverse Ammo along the Westside Trail to Lake of the Clouds or take the Ammo Trail directly. The first option is longer and requires good weather above the treeline, but it offers stunning views along the way. The second option is faster and better suited for bad weather, though you'll need to bootpack the steep section along the falls.
Descent: On a good day, you can ski all the way down from the hut. Start with a gentle traverse along the ridge until you're right above the gully, then drop in. Usually, this upper section will be scoured and may require bootpacking; crampons are recommended.
The descent begins relatively steep and narrow, forming a half-pipe shape within the gully, but it gradually transitions to a moderate pitch and widens as you descend. Near the bottom, stay skier's left to avoid the falls; this route also helps maintain speed and the grade necessary to ski down to the Ammo Trail.
The final section is a narrow, fun trail with gentle to no incline. Early or late in the season, you may need to contend with stream crossings on the trail. Be mindful of hikers along the way.
Oakes: On a full day, you can easily link Oakes and Monroe into a single trip, creating the perfect remote experience away from the crowds.
