Description
Classic line visible from Mt Baker ski area parking lot. Circuitous approach requires taking
Mazama Approach to top of Mazama bowl, down to Iceberg lake, up secret bowl, and traverse of Corona bowl to summit of East peak of Mt Herman.
Descent of the couloir has a steep entrance, often ringed with cornices. The BCA guide of the area gives the steepest angle here being 40-45 degrees. The couloir itself maxes out at 38 degrees. While not too steep, as with couloirs safe avalanche conditions and skiable snow is critical. The bottom has a large stone, where exiting right is usually best, as it is wider and less steep. Reportedly, a moat may form here late-season and the left exit may be better.
Descent of couloir takes you to bottom of Corona bowl area, with two or three options of exit. Skiing down to Bagley creek is an option, but is generally less favorable due to cliffs, avalanche debris and low snow cover. Better to skin up the subpeak directly south of the exit of Stoneman and ski down to the Bagley lakes and back home!
